Education through Toys and Games

The workshop was conducted under Extension Services of Children’s University. The workshop was inaugurated by Commissioner Higher Education, Smt. Jayanti S. Ravi. The workshop began with a prayer. Teachers of various schools from different districts of the state participated in the workshop.
In the introductory lecture Mrs Jayanti Ravi, Commissioner Higher Education and CEO Balgokulam, briefed out the salient feature of the University, its four parts viz Research, Training, Extension services, Education. She mentioned that the concept of Children’s University is unique and it’s a dream concept of the Chief Minister Narendrabhai Modi.
In her introductory talk, she mentioned about Active Learning, which involves transaction in the class room. The transaction is of two kinds: Verbal Intelligence and Numerical Intelligence. But, apart from these two there are other kinds of intelligence. But, it is shocking that the creative intelligence of a child reduces as he grows up. Does it then means that school kills the creative intelligence of a child? While concluding her speech; she emphased that it is a high time to bring change in our class room.
Then, Prof Sundershan Khanna Principal Designer, Head of toy innovation centre greeted the CEO, Balgokulam Mrs Jayanti S. Ravi and thanked her for such an inspiring and thrilling introduction. He also mentioned that, when he first heard about Children’s University it raised a question in his mind. But, then once he came to know about the Objectives, Vision, and Mission of the university; he felt that it’s a creative innovative initiative.
He brought many things like toys, photographs etc to show to the participants. He mentioned that, for him the concept behind making toys have two reasons:
- Every society has a great deal of practical useful knowledge, which is often expressed through the tales and toys of that society.
- His own Childhood experiences.
He said that today the role of teacher is a guide or a coach. There should be some freedom and some structure in an organization. He mentioned that process of learning is to experience and internalize. He also emphasized about bringing outside reality; in creative way in the classroom.
He said that in making mistake there is a way to learn. Certain skills are inherent in every one of us. So, it is necessary to bring out the inherent skills and need of the day is to do research and take initiative for how to make education interesting.
For him, Toy making introduces Children to a Scientific method of working. In this way, making and playing with their toys; their faults and shortcoming can be realised quickly. This is so, because unless everything is done according to certain specifications the toys will not work at all or would work poorly. Children even on their own can make changes and remove defects and that way they are introduced to the basic ideas of experimentation and creativity in a subtle; yet effective manner. A child effortlessly gets exposed to the principles of Science, particularly those of physics e.g. aerodynamics, applied mechanics, energy storage and conversion, atmospheric pressure, gravity, centrifugal and centripetal force etc. He said that, these toys being so simple to make and easy to play with provide a clearer concept of science; learning becomes a part and parcel of the play and joyful experience.
He taught to make toys to the participants. All the participants were enthusiastic and actively participated in the workshop. They curiously learnt to make many toys. All seems to go back to their childhood days. The teachers of various schools brought more ornamentation and creativity while learning the basic structure from prof. sudarshan Khanna. In his power point presentation he showed lot of photographs of toys and toy makers from different states of India particularly West Bengal, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Northeast. The names of certain toys learnt by participants were vice amplifier, paper clapper, siren, paper pipe rattle, helicopter, rotating stick, rabbit etc.
The workshop ended with vote of thanks by Shri Mehul Vyas.

આભારવિધિ:- આચાર્ય શ્રી ભાવેશભાઈ એલ. મારડીયા (શ્રી સ્વામિનારાયણ ઈંગ્લીશ મીડીયમ સ્કુલ, સુરત) દ્વારા આભારવિધિ કરવામાં આવી વર્કશોપ- તાલીમ બેઠક-૧ ૧૨:૦૦ કલાક - ચાર્ટ પેપરમાંથી શ્રી ખન્ના સાહેબે માણસની આકૃતિ બનાવી તેમજ દરેક શિક્ષકો પાસે પણ બનાવડાવી. - જુદા-જુદા કલરનાં કાગળોમાંથી પંખાની રચના બનાવી. ભોજન /વિરામ: ૧:૧૫ કલાક
તાલીમ બેઠક-૨
૨:૦૦ કલાક શ્રી ખન્ના સાહેબ દ્વારા સફેદ કાગળમાંથી પતંગીયું તૈયાર કરવામાં આવ્યું તેમજ દરેક શિક્ષકોએ પણ બનાવેલ. - કાગળમાંથી પીપુડી બનાવવામાં આવી. - પ્લાસ્ટીકનાં દડાઓમાંથી અવનવા રમકડાં બનાવવામાં આવ્યા. જેમાં શિક્ષકોનો ઉત્સાહ વધારે જોવા મળ્યો. - સફેદ કાગળમાંથી સસલાની રચના બનાવવામાં આવી. જે ખૂબજ ઓછા સમયમાં તૈયાર થયેલ.
સમાપન: ૪:૦૦ કલાક સમાપન બેઠકમાં દરેક શિક્ષકો પાસેથી શાબ્દિક અને લેખિત સ્વરૂપમાં વર્કશોપ અંગેનાં અભિપ્રાયો લેવામાં આવ્યા. પ્રોજેક્ટ કો-ઓર્ડિનેટર દ્વારા વર્કશોપમાં ભાગ વિધેલ દરેક શિક્ષકશ્રીનો આભાર માનવામાં આવ્યો. દરેક શિક્ષકોને ચિલ્ડ્રન્સ યુનિવર્સિટી દ્વારા પ્રમાણપત્ર આપવામાં આવ્યું ત્યારબાદ દરેક શિક્ષકોને T.A. આપવામાં આવ્યું.
પ્રતિભાવોનાં તારણો: - વેસ્ટમાંથી બેસ્ટ બનાવતા શીખવા મળેલ. - વક્તવ્ય ઓછું અને કાર્ય વધું જોવા મળેલ. - વિજ્ઞાનનાં સિધ્ધાંતોની સમજ સારી રીતે બાળકોને આપી શકાય છે. - બાળકમાં રહેલી સુષુપ્ત શક્તિઓ આ પ્રકારના વર્કશોપથી બહાર આવે છે. રમકડાં અને રમત દ્વારા શિક્ષણ” કાર્યશાળામાં સુરત જિલ્લાની માધ્યમિક શાળાનાં કુલ ૪૦ શિક્ષકોએ ભાગ લિધેલ
ઉદ્દધાટન ક્રાર્યક્રમ:- ૧૧:૦૦ કલાકે કાર્યશાળાનું ઉદ્દઘાટન કરવામાં આવ્યું.

વર્કશોપ- તાલીમ બેઠક-૧ ૧૨:૦૦ કલાક -સફેદ કાગળમાંથી સસલુ બનાવતા શિક્ષકો ભોજન /વિરામ: ૧:૧૫ કલાક
તાલીમ બેઠક-૨ ૨:૦૦ કલાક - શ્રી ખન્ના સાહેબ દ્વારા સફેદ કાગળમાંથી પતંગીયું તૈયાર કરવામાં આવ્યું તેમજ દરેક શિક્ષકોએ પણ બનાવ્યું. - કાગળમાંથી પીપુડી બનાવવામાં આવી. જે દરમ્યાન ખૂબજ રમૂજી વાતાવરણ ખડું થયેલું. - સસલાની રચના બનાવવામાં આવી. જે ખૂબજ ઓછા સમયમાં તૈયાર થયેલ. - પ્લાસ્ટીકનાં દડા(નાના-મોટા)ઓમાંથી અવનવા રમકડાં બનાવવામાં આવેલા.
